Wii to use software-based DVD playback in the latter part of next year.

Wii Mark 2 With DVD Functionality Due 2007
As we sit patiently awaiting the arrival of Nintendo’s Wii next month (December 8th, if you really need reminding again) news comes in that the Wii Mark 2 is already scheduled for release later in 2007.

So, what’s different about the Wii Mark 2? Simply that it features DVD playback functionality, courtesy of a company called Sonic Solutions, which informs us that:

“Nintendo, the worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, has chosen Sonic CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator to bring high-quality DVD movie viewing to a future version of the company's Wii gaming console. Nintendo plans to release this version of Wii in the latter half of 2007.

“Based on the same technology trusted by Hollywood studios, CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator is a robust, software-based DVD playback engine that delivers broad playback compatibility on a variety of platforms. The proven technology offers exceptional picture quality and supports all standard video and audio formats offered in the DVD specification, as well as advanced functions such as anamorphic widescreen video, motion menus, and multiple video angles.”

For SPOnG this news doesn’t really impact our decision to get a Wii on day one. We’re buying Nintendo’s console purely for the games, not for DVD playback. Plus, it seems we already have more than enough DVD players to know what to do with.

By the time the DVD-enabled Wii is available later next year, we will be watching most of our movies in eye-burningly high definition, either via the PS3’s Blu-ray or via the Xbox 360’s soon-to-be-released HD DVD drive add-on.

However, according to a recent report by new media research firm Centris:

“DVD playback device penetration continues to grow. The total number of DVD playback-capable households grew to 91 million in April 2006 (in the USA), which represents an 8% increase over the previous year. Adding to this figure was an increase in DVD-enabled game units which grew 11% year over year to approximately 45 million.”

As we go live with this story, SPOnG awaits comment from a pre-Wii-stressed member of Nintendo UK. Of course, what we expect them to say is that this is not Wii v.2 but merely a tweak. But as soon as we hear, we'll post the update.

What do you think? Will this affect your desire to own a Wii this Christmas or not? Let us know in the forum.

i think u sum it up nicely:

if i had the option, sure id prefer dvd playback on the wii but only because it would mean i dont have to change any wires around, power cables etc.not sumthing il loose sleep over

I already have three DVD players in my room. I'll probably have a fourth if I buy a slimline PS2 soon. (I currently do not own a PS2). Having a fifth is sheer oppulence. Such an acquisition would need to be matched with ladies plopping grapes into my mouth while a muscloid being fans me with giant eucalyptus leaves, and a panther lying at my feet.

There is too much emphasis on dvd playback with games consoles, as spong say it will have no effect on the initial launch

i read this news somewhere else first, interestingly they didnt mention that the dvd playback was going to be installed into the wii's internal drive, and said this was up for speculation. implying it could be an add-on drive, 360 style.

which would make sense because to be announcing future upgrades to the core hardware now, before the first iteration of the console is even released, especially when its a public-friendly addition like dvd playback, seems a bit odd. so does having a clunky PoS common-as-muck dvd player attached to the wii externally though

as has been said, most people have dvd players coming out of their ears, not least other consoles with dvd playback (wii60 anyone?) and are buying wii for gameplay.

in all fairness itll be another panasonic q id have thought, rather than a ds lite

Panasonic Q? Superb machine that we never got. What a shame.

Despite that I can say that while I respect the u turn, I do feel my Wii is for games pure and simple. Unless the dvd playback is region free I'm not interested. That's what I have a dedicated dvd player for and this was also my gripe with PS2. I just hope Nintendo sort out a way to curb the piracy of Wii games without hurting imports. Sony take notes here.

Nice option but no region free, not bothered either way. I also feel films are slowly dipping their toes into games arena too much, though I know that's the reality we live in.

What worries me sometimes is that when dvds can sell for £10-15 and games for £40-60 new gamers may buy games less, something the industry doesn't need, especially with preowned games doing well and the likes of ebay also doing well.

just to clarify, i meant that i think nintendo will position in market and treat the WiiVD similarly to the way they did the panasonic q. rather than being thrust to the top of the pile as the international standard like the dslite reiteration was. could be wrong

i used to covet the panasonic q like crazy

Wii should have had dvd playback from day 1.
There's no reason why it should have been left out.

So this sounds like a firmware upgrade. It'd be good if they could also allow other media formats to be played back as well. Would allowing the playback of many different file type help promote piracy?
The Wii has no storage device so would it?
I wouldn't count SD cards in that way as an SD card costs more than whatever you're planning to copy.

Thing is that Wii is not all about the games. Having all the channels and telling you the weather and all that pretty much states the case that it's not all about the games. So why can't people play the video discs that they already own?

Ah, but the Wii does have memory... 512 mb of it infact... not that it would change the siutation...

The piracy issue comes into effect when CD-R(W) DVD+/-R(W) discs can be played on the system. Having a storage device attached also doesn't help.

As for region coding, all that is doing is forcing people to buy DVDs from their home country. That keeps profits from escaping overseas.

I think having as much functionality as possible in a game console is good. That's where the industry. People want an all in one device. I was pretty against the fact but I'm seeing the inherent benefit from ultra-options. 360 being example #1. Also, the Japanese are minimalists. They look to their electronics to do alot.

512 mb is plenty space for many things. You can store entire operating systems in less than 500 mb. Piracy doesn't have to be exclusive to ripping a game to solidstate memory.

Your viewpoint is skewed.

Looks like this is exactly what is happening.
