SPOnG has just come off the blower with our ‘bezzie mates’ at Nintendo UK (how much do we want that Wii debug kit?!) who kindly gave us the company’s official line on initial stocks of Wii in Europe for the December 8th launch.
PR Manager, Robert Saunders told SPOnG that, "Nintendo is mobilising the largest worldwide video game console launch in the last decade with approximately 4 million Wii systems available globally by the end of December 2006. In Europe Nintendo is maximising all its resources to ensure that there is a good quantity of stock available in Europe at launch and a regular supply of Wii consoles coming into the market from launch through 2007.”
He added, gravely, “However due to the phenomenal pace of pre-orders over recent weeks it is likely that demand will outstrip supply at launch."
Oh my! So the must-have toy for Christmas is guaranteed to sell out within minutes of going on sale next month.
Never fear though. If you, like South Park’s Cartman, just cannot risk not getting your hands on a Wii at launch next month, then SPOnG has the answer.
Speaking to a number of retailers and publishing contacts this morning, it seems that the non-specialist retail outlets – particularly John Lewis, Dixons, Currys, Virgin, Argos, Comet, Choices Direct and Woolworths – are all still taking pre-orders for Wii.
So, on that note, SPOnG’s off down to our local Woolies to sort out our Christmas. We suggest that, if you haven’t pre-ordered a Wii already, that you drop everything immediately and do the same.
