Gears of War Played On 20-Metre-High Screen...
Ok, get ready to be jealous. SPOnG-News spent yesterday afternoon playing Epic’s glorious Gears of War. It is, as was expected, nothing less than the most visceral, beautiful action game we’ve ever experienced.

Not only that, as you can see from the pic of our man Phil right here, we got to play it on London’s IMAX cinema screen. The game was projected onto a 20-metre-high screen by a 12000 Lumens Projector, in gloriously loud 5.1 Dolby surround sound.

SPOnG-News also spoke with Thilo, yesterday’s projectionist, who told us, “This is the
first time we’ve ever hooked up an Xbox 360 to a cinema projector and the effect was insane … like a total cinema experience but also interactive.”

An IMAX rep also told us that the screen is the height of FIVE double decker buses. This must mean that there were times in the game when our character, Marcus Phenix, was more than eight metres high.

This is how next generation videogames were meant to be played! SPOnG-News demands that 'The Industry' will follow Microsoft’s lead but extend it by organising consumer events at this glorious palace of entertainment.

We’ll be trying to catch up with Gears’ designer Cliffy B sometime soon to find out what Epic has in store for us for 2007, although we imagine that he’s taking a well-deserved extended holiday now that his labour of love is finally finished.

Phil is currently recovering from the sensory overload and will be bringing us his first impressions of Gears of War later today, so stay tuned.

The SPOnG-News Team now demands our own IMAX screen to play all videogames on, We’ve spent some time scouring eBay and on the phone this morning trying to locate one with no luck so far. If anyone out there has one for sale, please call.
