The New E3 Set For La-La Land?
E3, as we knew and loved it, is over. But no! Hang on there sad-eyed game-geezers, it’s back!

It seems The Staples Center and/or the Los Angeles Convention Center is to play host yet again to a huge videogame-themed consumer show to be held in mid-October 2007, called the GamePro Expo show.

The massive annual industry showcase event that was the Electronic Entertainment Expo (Ex3, E3, geddit?) had finally outgrown itself this year. Spiralling costs for attending games publishers lead to E3’s organisers, the Electronic Software Association (ESA) to put together a massively scaled-down event for 2007. The renamed ‘E3 Media and Business Summit’ will take place in and around the beach-front hotels of sunny Santa Monica.

Events Organiser, International Data Group now plans to step into the huge vacuum created by the demise of the old E3 and, according to a memo circulated to LA Convention and Visitors Bureau members this week, intends to produce a new games show to be held in Los Angeles in mid-October 2007.

In related news, Mary Dolaher, formerly one of the main E3 organisers at the ESA has just taken a similar position with the new organiser.

From the memo, "IDG has been secured to run the new GamePro Expo show, what we knew as E3….Use E3 as a guide when prepping for GamePro Expo."

GamePro Expo is also said to have the full backing of the ESA. No details have emerged so far as to which games companies will be backing the event. SPOnG will be speaking to our contacts at the ESA and at all major publishers over the coming days to find out more about their thoughts and opinions on this new event.

Michael Krouse, vice president of convention sales for the LA Convention and Visitors Bureau, said, "I am absolutely convinced this show will be as big as [the old] E3."

GamePro Expo will feature trade, consumer and gaming competition elements and is currently penned in for the 18-20 October 2007. Best get booking those early flights and scuzzy beach-front motels again kids!

The industry hates mixing with gamers but there should be more of this than the take your money and run attitude that currently drowns these western industry shows.

The recent Game Life thingy or whatever its called is a good example of the industry getting into touch with everyday man and gamers alike. Its good to get to know your fanbase and a necessary but smart evil. Amen to move of it, but we have a long way to go to match TGS.
