The Charts: PES 6 Shoots and Scores

Becomes the fastest selling 360 title to date

There’s been a huge retail boost for the UK’s games industry in the latest round of weekly figures. A raft of quality new releases hitting stores over the half-term vacation, with seven major Triple-A releases in this week’s Top 40, drove the sales.

The most recent outing of the football fan’s videogame of choice, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (PS2, XB360, PC), shoots straight to the top of the All Formats Charts this week; shifting over a quarter of a million copies, and becoming the fastest-selling 360 title to date. This accolade was previously owned by Capcom’s Dead Rising). PES 6 also racked up the highest first week sales numbers since ‘GTA: San Andreas’ back in November 2004.

EA’s FIFA 07 holds on to the Number Two spot this week, with sales bolstered by the release of the surprisingly-very-good Xbox 360 SKU (Stock Keeping Unit for those of you not deeply mired in retail-inventory-speak). See SPOnG’s full review for our take on the latest twist in the eternal PES/FIFA war.

EA’s ‘The Sims 2: Pets’ holds on to the Number Three spot, with the release of a new DS version this week.

Sports Interactive/Sega’s PC Football Manager 2007 drops three places down from the top spot last week to Number Four this week, while Rockstar’s splendid PS2 title ‘Canis Canem Edit’ jumps straight into the chart at Number Five. This is thanks in part to retailers naughtily flogging it before the street date. We’ve also got to give ‘props’ to all that wonderful press coverage generated by The Daily Mail, and – of course – to Jack Thompson’s legal debacle in Florida’s Miami-Dade court earlier this month!

Further down the Top Ten, Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent slips one place to Number Six.

VU Games' Scarface: The World is Yours drops three places down to Seven. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 drives back up one place to Number Eight (following the release of last week’s 360 version). Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy drops three places to Number Nine; and THQ's Cars drops two places down to Number Ten.

In terms of other new releases last week, NC Soft’s Guild Wars: Nightfall expansion pack for the popular MMO is, impressively, straight into the All Formats Chart at Number 15.

Party titles continue to do well for Sony, with Buzz! Junior: Jungle Party climbing up eleven places to Number 16 this week, while Singstar: Legends goes straight in at Number 24.

Midway’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon debuts at Number 27, as VU Games' cutesy The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning is in at Number 28.
