Sony finally unveiled some more concrete details on the PlayStation 3's online network at its Gamer's Day event yesterday. The company was also in a position to confirm the final 21 PS3 titles that will be available in the loosely-defined ‘launch window’.
Sony also unveiled a raft of downloadable games, including a newly-announced David Jaffe title, Criminal Crackdown (pictured here, more below) and a title called Blast Factor (see pics at SPOnG's
Blast Factor page) a Geometry Wars look-a-like which was demo’ed by Phil Harrison.
All PS3’s online content will be priced in local currency, unlike the often clumsy system on Xbox Live, where you have constantly to try and figure out how many Microsoft points equate to how many dollars or pounds. Sony has released few concrete details on its plans for episodic content at this point.
Further details were also released on the previously announced downloadable titles: Fl0w, Got Sudoku, Grip Shift DLX, all of which will set American gamers back a maximum of $14.99.
Revealing details on Criminal Crackdown on his own blog, Jaffe, in a refreshingly casual and informal manner, states:
”We announced our new game today: Criminal Crackdown for Sony Downloadable Games Service. I am SO SO SO excited about this game; I am having such fun working on it and it's just great to be able to finally show it off a bit.
“Well, it's late and I'm beat....woke up at 4am last night and could not get back to bed...guess I was excited about the big Sony Gamer's Day event...but now I'm just ready to crash...
“....it's really interesting watching the forums light up with the comments on the downloadable games. Things seem very positive on all the games and pretty much all the stuff I've seen on our game is very good...and I hear over and over from people: the game looks like pure, straight up fun....which is nice, cause that was/is our main goal!
“It's a little scary tho (sic) in that while I am still creative director for Sony Santa Monica (which means I'm dealing with titles big and small), my own personal titles are these smaller, downloadable games now...they are just what I love, where my passion lies. And it's just really scary and exciting because we just have no clue what kind of a turnout there will be for these kinds of games....but I've always followed my gut and been happy about the results...so I imagine, since my gut tells me these kinds of games are what I should be making, that all is well…”
SPOnG implores you to keep on following your gut instinct David, because we just know that if you are having fun making a game, we’re going to have probably ten times the amount of fun playing it.
So what else is new from Gamer’s Day?
