Following the announcement from Oxygen Interactive earlier today that a bunch of new ‘Champions’ have been signed up to appear in the forthcoming PS2 and PC darts title,
PDC World Championship Darts there has been heated discussions in the SPOnG office over the classification of darts as a sport.
Don't get us wrong. SPOnG likes darts. But it has a time and a place. Usually the end of the evening in a filthy, smoky pub after five to eight pints of slightly off lager.
Either that, or perhaps whilst idly watching re-runs of classic Bullseye on UK Gold, marvelling at the hilariously poor prizes ("look at what you coulda won" crows Bowen!).
Even those of us who don’t believe darts should be classed as a sport have to admit to liking the odd game of 'round the board' in the pub now and then, and we are all agreed on one thing: if darts is the perfect game/sport for the idle drunkard, then computer darts is surely the epitome of idleness.
So, let’s have a look at what’s in the game, other than the likenesses of some fat, beery men who are lucky enough to make a living out of drinking beer and chucking arrows at walls.
The final five Champions putting their names and faces in the game are: world number one, Colin Lloyd; great showman Peter Manley; future World Champion-in-waiting, Adrian Lewis; Canadian star, John Part and former World Grand Prix winner, Alan Warriner-Little.
As we would also expect, each of the above players also has the requisite darts nickname, the press release informing us:
“Currently top of the world rankings, Lloyd - nicknamed ‘Jaws’ - broke onto the scene in 1999 where he played solidly until his form in 2004 and 2005 saw him pick up two major titles, securing the number one position. Winner of the 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic, Manley - nicknamed ‘One Dart’ - for his clinical finishing, remains among the leading competitors in the sport. Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame since making his debut at the 2004 Budweiser UK Open as a teenager, and is now tipped by many as a future World Champion. Canadian star Part ‘Darth Maple’ is one of the best known faces in darts and one of the few players to have won the World Championship with both the PDC and the BDO. Alan ‘The Iceman’ Warriner-Little has been a top professional for more than a decade and is a consistently high level performer on the circuit, winning the 2001 World Grand Prix and reaching the final in 2004.”
PDC World Championship Darts is unsurprisingly coming out at the same time as the 2007 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship this December, on PC and PS2. We’ll bring you a full preview of the game as soon as we get hold of the code in the next few weeks.
