When SPOnG first heard the rumours that Oblivion was heading to Sony’s PSP, we have to say that we were more than doubtful. ‘How could such an immense, all-encompassing RPG be squeezed on Sony’s tiny, shiny handheld?’ we wondered at the time.
Well, it can and it will, as we’ve just been informed by none other than Ubisoft that they will be co-publishing one of our favourite RPGs of recent years on both the PS3 (due at launch in November in the US) and a version on the PSP (The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion, due next Spring).
Superb news then, for both Ubisoft and Sony, not to mention the millions of non-360 and non-PC gamers out there who have yet to experience the joys of Oblivion. Details are sparse on the PSP version at time of going to press, but we do know that it will be in a different setting to its big console brother.
So what’s new in the PS3 version? The game will introduce a new faction called Knights of the Nine which the developers describe as "The good Dark Brotherhood".
"Oblivion has these really good character archetypes for evil," says executive producer Todd Howard. "It has the Dark Brotherhood: You get your outfit, you feel like an assassin, you feel like an evil guy, [and] you role-play like an evil guy. We [didn't] have the opposite end of that. There [was] very little reward for being a goody two-shoes. As opposed to adding content that allowed your character to just experience new quests, we wanted to create something that allowed your character to become something new."
“We are pleased to partner with Bethesda Softworks to bring this landmark role-playing game to all PlayStation fans,” said Alain Corre, Ubisoft’s EMEA Executive Director. “No doubt that this brand new version will continue the great Oblivion success story.”
More news and assets on both new versions of Oblivion as we get them.
