Guitar Hero goes Multiformat in 2007

RedOctane busies itself suing cheap guitar peripherals maker

SPOnG has just heard that Robert Kotick, CEO and chairman of Activision (who recently acquired GH publisher, RedOctane), has just made an announcement as part of his keynote speech at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia XV Conference to the effect that the metal-tastic Guitar Hero will go to multiple formats in 2007.

Previously, as you are most likely aware, the title had been a PS2 exclusive, though rumours of a next gen move over to Xbox 360 in addition to PlayStation 3 have been doing the rounds for some time.

Whether or not there are any plans for a Wii-specific Guitar Hero game remains to be seen, although Kotick did mention that the game would appear "on every significant new format."

SPOnG will be contacting the PR guys over here in the UK in the coming days to try to clarify the situation a little more.

Guitar Hero 2 meanwhile should be with us in just over two months time. You can see SPOnG's recent news on GH2's amazing line-up for more information on one of our most-anticipated sequels for 2006 (even thought the first game actually game out in Europe in 2006! - Ed).

In other news, Guitar Hero-publishing subsidiary RedOctane has recently filed suit against an unlicensed peripherals manufacturer called The Ant Commandos which has been churning out these rather cool looking wireless Guitar Hero controllers (pictured above right).

However, whilst the idea of a wireless controller that looks loads better than the Gibson-inspired 'official' one might seem appealing, by all accounts they are rubbish and don't work at all well with the game. So it looks like we are going to have to wait for the official wireless guitars to come out, which shouldn't be too long now we suspect.

Some wags have also noted the deep irony of RedOctane - a company that grew out of flogging unlicensed, third-party dance pads for Konami's Dance Dance Revolution games - suing a third-party peripherals manufacturer for allegedly copying the packaging of Guitar Hero.
