Sony and Nokia are to investigate the possibility of connecting the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 to mobile phones and the Internet following the issuing of a “memorandum of understanding “ from both companies. A spokesperson commenting on behalf of both companies states that the venture is “basically to understand the obstacles of bringing wireless gaming to Europe through PSOne and PlayStation 2.” Projects on the agenda include the research of connecting mobile phones to both platforms and allowing owners of either console to acquire internet-based hints, tips and cheats via text messaging or WAP. Development will initially take place in the UK.
The venture begins months after the appearance of existing applications in the Japanese market, where the stability of the telecom network is far sturdier. Should the investigation of these possibilities bear fruit, consumers will be able to swap characters and save data over the airwaves instead of using of memory cards, uniting the global video games industry at a level never seen before.
