Sonic Advance will mark a milestone in computer games history as these famous competitors become colleagues. Coincidentally, this landmark change in direction in the Sega timeline is also the tenth anniversary of Sonic’s original release on the Sega Mega Drive.
Due for release in 2001, this isn’t Sonic’s first outing on a handheld format. The little blue rodent also made multiple appearances on the Sega Game Gear. A machine that failed, at least in part, due to the success of Nintendo’s long-running Game Boy. It is unlikely that Sonic Advance will be ready for the March launch of the machine in Japan, but a summer release looks promising.
All previous handheld versions of Sonic have lacked a multi-player option. The 32-bit Game Boy Advance would be an ideal platform to incorporate such a feature, due to its four-player capabilities. No confirmation of whether it will or not has been given, but we’ll have the news as soon as it’s available.
