Interesting news breaking over IGN right now, in which the NewsCorp game channel claims Nintendo is withholding access to online gaming access for all third-party releases.
In a fairly dull preview of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, IGN notes, "The game will feature a four-player mode and Activision is attempting to "make everything that's available in the single-player mode available in the multiplayer one, too." We don't have details about the mode, but it will be four-player split-screen in nature. Gamers hoping for an online component, however, are in for bad news, because one isn't planned. Activision would not say why, but IGN has separately learned from multiple development sources that Nintendo will not release Wii Wi-Fi Connection libraries to third parties until early 2007, which means that no third party launch title will have an online mode."
Which seems like perfect Nintendo insanity to us. Just when you think they have everything cracked... Boom! No online gaming from any third-party of the first phase of Wii titles.
Of course, it could be complete tosh and Nintendo isn't saying either way. SPOnG believes Nintendo will conduct a live test of Wii online with a select number of titles to make sure everything, you know, works.
Red Steel is expected to be one of these titles.
Online components will be built into some launch Wii software. However, online gaming will not be available from day one, with a protracted beta-test taking several months to complete.
Expect full details and confirmation in the coming weeks.
