Nintendo has moved to outline how the looming Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be controlled across its two host platforms, with some rather unpopular news being dropped by 'Not A Beetle' NOA stalwart George Harrison who explained the Wii version will be locked to its respective controller.
It was hoped that the GameCube controller, or Wii Classic controller, would be an option for players. This, according to Harrison, will not be the case. "Zelda TP will be releasing on both GCN and Wii on the same day as the launch of Wii," he explained to the quite frankly disturbing online camp, Camp Hyrule. "The GCN controller will be able to play the GCN version on the Wii console, but will not be able to play the Wii version."
This has come as a blow to many, as early doubters in the press have begun to bemoan the enforced use of the WiiMote across the entirety of the game. It was assumed that Nintendo would have a switchable control scheme, enabling users to play with the GameCube controller for most of the game and use the WiiMote in controller-context-sensitive areas.
The news has sparked fierce debate amongst Nintendo fans over which will be the true superior version, the Wii with its 16:9 full progressive display and additional content or that of the GameCube, a version which won't make your arms ache.
It's probably fair to say that Nintendo has been completely blindsided by this reaction, the first truly negative feedback from its fanbase which, to date, has taken great pains to pour affection over every element of the 'new-generation' project. The big concern for Nintendo will be the target of this negative feedback; new Zelda. It's a launch game that has cleverly been sold in to the Nintendo community which by rights should have been playing it on their GameCubes over a year ago.
The Kyoto cliche, sorry, 'giant', will want the waters of Hyrule glassy-still as the Wii launches, alongside a game that, if you ignore the raging hyperbole, promises to be one of the greatest videogames ever.
GameCube or Wii? Your thoughts below please.
I the meantime,
check out this link from when SPOnG managed to sneak a video camera into a Zelda presentation when the game was to be created only for the GameCube, a version now relegated to that big pile of code Miyamoto uses to prop up his wonky desk.
