The Charts – Cars, Guns, Magic Mushrooms, Gays

Summer holiday buying bonanza boosts sales.

A healthy week for game software sales this past seven days, with the highest sales week recorded since the last peak back at Easter time, with PC super-budget (Froggies, Moose on the Loose and Galaxy of Games anyone?) and PS2 titles doing particularly well, boosted no doubt by put-upon parents nationwide fighting the encroaching mid-holiday boredom blighting their ADD-riddled offspring.

There's no movement at the top of the All Formats Chart as rendered by ChartTrack this week, with THQ’s movie cash-in Cars holding firm at the top, also boasting the number one spot in the PS2, PSP, Xbox, GameCube and GBA charts.

Rockstar’s GTA: Liberty City Stories hangs in at number two and Nintendo’s DS continues to perform well as the third best-selling format this week, still boasting two exclusive titles in the top five, with New Super Mario Bros. at number three and Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training climbing one place from number five to number four this week.

In other DS news, a little lower down the top 20, Big Brain Academy climbs four places up from 16 to 12, whilst Animal Crossing: Wild World drops a couple of places down to number 15.

The looming Premiership season has boosted interest in football. Again. Konami’s bargain-bucket platinum-priced Pro Evolution Soccer 5 moves back up the chart. Again. This week, it’s back up two places to number five. For heaven’s sake, if you don’t own this game yet, please go out and buy it this week - you won't regret it.

SCEE’s Formula 1 06 Jensons (new verb there!) up the chart, cruising into the top ten this week at number, erm, ten. New release news is pretty thin on the ground, with Sony’s pink pound-targeted Singstar Anthems failing to make much of a din, croaking tunelessly into the top 20 at, erm, number 20. The only gays in SPOnG’s village were very disappointed upon hearing this sad news, and spontaneously burst - aptly enough - into a version of 'What Have I Done to Deserve This?'
