John Carmack on id's Brand New IP

News from the ground at QuakeCon 2006

SPOnG caught up with id software legend John Carmack at E3 this year, where he told us all about id’s next project - a rare in-house development with an all-new IP, innovative new technology in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and his thoughts on next-gen consoles (bottom line: he likes 360).

Carmack delivered the keynote address over the weekend at the annual QuakeCon, where once more the focus was on next-generation gaming. He remained fairly tight-lipped about the company's next new project, only stressing that id will continue to play to its strengths.

"We've got millions of people who love what we do, and we're going to probably continue making them happy...We're not about to say, 'id decided not to do a first-person shooter, so these six level designers, we don't need you any more," Carmack stressed.

The game will, however, do things “never seen from id before... We are branching out into different directions." So far, so vague.

Most interestingly, talking about the ‘megatexture’ technology and the environments in the game, Carmack said: "I said that I'd developed a third-generation megatexture technology at 128,000 x 128,000 textures, so it's a pretty safe bet it's not a corridor shooter."

Here, in a quick-to-digest bullet-pointed fashion, are all the highlights of what the big-brained, FPS-genius had to say:

# id Software will be focusing on gameplay over graphics in their next unannounced title.
# the next title will be a 3D action title that will be id's biggest diversion since Wolfenstein.
# A more advanced version of the megatexture technology will be used in the next title, which includes lots of outdoor areas.
# id will continue to work on games that its millions of fans enjoy.
# Quake3 was labeled by Carmack as the "most pure game".
# While they will be developing their next game simultaneously on the Xbox 360, their primary development platform is still the PC.
# Their current project will include multi-processor support in both the console and PC platforms.
# Discussed the lack of progress development software has made over the years.
# id is branching out in a different direction for their new title which they expect to be a blockbuster.
# Discussed the fun his cell phone game development has been.
# Has thought about porting cell phone games over to the Nintendo DS.
# Security was on the minds of id during the development of Quake3.
# The recently patched Quake3 bugs were let into the game code in a later patch, not the original game code.
# Discussed the problems of releasing a game's source code while the game is still popular like they did with Quake3. Carmack polled the audience and asked if they thought he released Quake3's source code too early. Only a few raised their hands.
# The current mod community is slacking because of the work it takes to make mods with such advanced games.
# id wants to stick with games that people inside the company are used to developing.
# id's next game has "a lot of people in it".
# nVidia is sponsoring Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace corporation's rocket in the latest X-Prize completion.

In terms of clues as to what his next new game is going to be, “it’s got a lot of people in it” is not really very specific is it?

Whatever, watch this space for more news on that project as SPOnG gets it.

No more Quake or Doom, please. To show us how good your ar you have to step away from these type of games. However I don't see this happening, but I'd like to be surprised.

i'd like to see Quake wars come 2 the 360 & Live, but then i think a new direction is needed, both quake & doom are begining to feel very last gen.

If Quake was done today no one would play it not even hardcore Quake fans. The sadsedt thing is that Quake is basically Doom done again with a new engine. Heck if the weapons are the same.
