42 All-Time Classics on Nintendo DS - Full Info

Wi-Fi compatible classic board, card and parlour games

Nintendo’s groundbreaking Touch! Generations range is to be bolstered this coming September, 29th to be precise, with the speaks-for-itself title "42 All-Time Classics".

42 All-Time Classics does what it says on the box, it delivers 42 popular and well-loved card, board and parlour games on one DS cartridge, competitively priced at a bargainous £20.

What’s perhaps most interesting for both traditional and non-traditional gamers is that many of the games are playable online using the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

The game was formerly known as ‘Game Fortune Bag’ otherwise known in Japan as Daredemo Asobi Taizen and in the US as Club House Games. Many of the games have been created and specifically modified for the Western hemisphere.

So, what’s on there then? Something for everyone is what’s on there. Check out the full list of games right here. You should be familiar with most, if not all of these, but if not just Google them or ask your dad or your gran!

Card Games include Old Maid, Spit, I Doubt It, Pig (not Wi-Fi enabled), plus Sevens, Memory, Black Jack, Hearts, President, Rummy, Seven Bridge, Last Card, Last Card Plus, Five Card Draw, Texas Hold 'Em, Nap, Spades, Contract Bridge (all Wi-Fi compatible).

Board Games, all of which are Wi-Fi compatible, include Chinese Checkers, Checkers, Dots and Boxes, Hasami Shogi, Turncoat, Connect Five, Grid Attack, Backgammon, Chess, Shogi, Field Tactics and the classic Ludo.

Parlour/Variety Games, again all of which are Wi-Fi compatible, include Soda Shake, Dominoes, Koi-Koi and Word Balloon. Action Games, yes, yet again all Wi-Fi compatible, include Bowling, Darts, Billiards, Balance and Takeover.

Finally, for the Billy No Mates out there, there’s a good bunch of single player games including Solitaire, Escape and MahJong Solitaire. Phew!

So, whilst some of the hardcore fanboy fraternity may well be turning their noses up at such an unashamed move on Nintendo’s part to court the mass market of casual and non-traditional gamers, it cannot be denied that pretty much anybody who has ever played any card, parlour or board game would not get something out of 42 All-Time Classics.

All the games in 42 All-Time Classics feature a stats tracking function and a built-in “Picto chat” function, so you can send picture messages whilst playing. The possibilities with this, especially for online poker, are indeed endless.

Lets get this straight... For years, people have been selling compilations of simple games on PS2 (chess, othello, connect 4, etc.) for five or ten quid. And everyone mocked this stuff as "just budget games", "not real games", etc.

Now, Nintendo gives us more games in a compilation at a higher price. So presumably this is just "budget rubish" as well? No - it seems not - from the tone of this article seems that this is a good thing all of a sudden.

What's the difference? That rather than play the PS2 game with your mate in front of the TV you are now playing over WiFi with a stranger? Is that enough to turn budget rubbish into groundbreaking Nintendo genius?

well mate you must remember the platform it is on. i probably wouldnt sit at home playing single player board games on my gamecube. i doubt id often be able to convince any of my friends to come round more than once for a session either.

but with the portability, touch screen and wifi features of the ds this sounds like something worth owning. its going to be a chunk of great fun on the move with the potential for hilarity with the pictochat.

i cant wait to play connect4 (5??) online whilst disrespecting my opponant through the medium of pictochat.

and yeah, nintendo in my eyes are the best software developer in this industry and have been for over 2 decades and that kind of helps :/

LOL - hopefully Nintendo fans/players will be more polite than X360 Live players :-)
