Epic: Gears of War Announcement Next Week

Demo on Live expected

Posted by Staff
As we mentioned yesterday, it looks as though a demo for the really rather stunning Gears of War should be making its way onto Xbox Live in the coming weeks, with a major announcement for the title mooted online by Epic Games vice president Mark Rein simply stating, "BIG announcement coming next week!" He continued, "Sounds like maybe the announcement that is going to be made isn't what you think it is."

So what do we expect? A demo on Live seems the most likely event, though of course it could be something as unimpressive as a release date or video. The Internet did flare with chatter that a multi-platform announcement may follow, though this seems based more on the hopes and dreams of none-Xbox 360 owning communities than anything of substance.

On a related note, Microsoft did cause some confusion as to when Gears of War will be launching. In a press release issued over the weekend detailing band Megadeth headlining Gigantour, a Microsoft-sponsored rock tour taking place in 25 venues between September to mid-October 2006, Craig Davison, Director of Global Games Marketing for Xbox said, "We're totally jazzed about the partnership between Gigantour 2006 and our forthcoming Xbox 360 blockbuster, 'Gears of War!'. Partnering a music extravaganza like GIGANTOUR with the launch of a mega-hit game like 'Gears of War' captures the excitement around two awesome happenings for fans of music and video games!"

So can we expect the game to launch during the tour? Microsoft remained silent on the issue.

We'll be calling Mark Rein tomorrow to ask him what's going on. He probably won't tell us but we'll call anyway. If he says anything interesting, funny or news-worthy and our recorder works properly, we'll tell you all about it then.
