You may have picked up reports from one of several hundred games news sites in the last few days which will tell you the German government has banned Capcom's upcoming zombie blaster Dead Rising from general sale due to it being too violent.
As the hordes rushed to copy each other, seemingly no one bothered to check whether the news was actually true. It isn't. Dead Rising is not banned in Germany. Simply, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) has not given the game a rating. It may be bought and sold legally throughout Germany, but may not be sold to anyone under the age of 18.
The game may be "indexed" at some point in the future, at which point Dead Rising will not be allowed to be advertised by Capcom. However, right now, the game will go on sale much like any other.
All German specialist stores will carry it. However, it's likely that without the USK rating, some general chain stores will not stock it.
Dead Rising releases in Germany September 8th this year for Xbox 360.
On a side note, we very much enjoyed some of the cover-up attempts following everyone's rather shoddy blunder. One read, "So there you have it - Dead Rising is not "banned" in Germany, but by its action, the USK has effectively prevented the software from being sold in the region anyway. Whether you want to call that a legitimate distinction or simply a technicality or form of words, we leave entirely up to the reader."
Quite impressive really. To blindly lift news from somewhere, not research or credit it in any way, get it all wrong, not realise, have to be contacted by someone to put you straight, then get that explanation back to front and come to a conclusion that is the opposite of reality.
Well done. Really.
