Assassin’s Creed, the looming sneak 'em up from Ubisoft, has been heavily touted as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, though news breaking over the weekend points to a major multi-platform release.
Although a game known as Assassin was shown running on 360 during this March's Game Developers' Conference in San Jose, it was thought Ubisoft had dropped all versions except that for the PlayStation 3, which was shown only for the new Sony machine during this year's E3 under the banner of Assassin's Creed. Indeed, Ubisoft seemed happy to let everyone believe that the game, in development at Prince of Persia-famed Ubisoft Montreal, was indeed an exclusive to the Sony platform.
Of course, this news backs up a widely distributed, leaked memo from Ubisoft which detailed a game known as Assassin for "PS3, Xbox 360, Rev, PC, PSP" from earlier this year.
Speaking to EGM's online wing, Ubisoft was interestingly coy on the subject. When asked "Is Assassin's Creed an exclusive title for the PS3 or is it only announced for the PS3?" Ubisoft would only answer, "Assassin's Creed is coming to the PS3. No other announcements have been made."
So it's all a big secret. It would appear that a timed exclusive deal is in place, meaning Sony can announce the game as being exclusive, for a period, before other platform announcements have been made, as was the case with the Grand Theft Auto series.
