Gamers take to the stage at Download festival

Whilst Guns N’ Roses were all over the place, by all accounts from those who were at Donington’s Download festival this weekend, Guitar Hero successfully rocked the joint.

“Metallica totally delivered, but Axl and his new band were just awful,” one rock-weary radio producer told us. “People were leaving in droves half way through Guns N’ Roses’ set. They had three lead guitarists, all of whom kept launching into these wanky solos, and none of whom were a patch on the mighty, and much-missed Slash,” he continued.

“Those Guitar Hero kids playing that PlayStation game went down a treat though. Both my kids are now hassling me to go and buy them the game!” our producer friend added.

Over 40 members of the public got a chance to get up on stage to play RedOctane's Guitar Hero over the weekend, knocking out note-perfect renditions of the classics – with Ace of Spades, Symphony of Destruction and Bark At The Moon, all pleasing the gathered metal faithful.

“As we were the first to play the festival, it’s technically correct – the organiser’s assured us – that we can say that we ‘opened’ for Guns N Roses,” said Simon Byron, RedOctane’s PR supremo, when SPOnG caught up with him earlier today.

Byron went on to tell us that, “There was an actual moshpit when guys were playing [Guitar Hero]. Plus we had bottles being thrown on the stage, which we were told was a good thing!”

SPOnG hopes that Mr Byron and his rock entourage made sure to not sample what was in those bottles!

Byron added: “We were a little nervous when setting up last week, as it could have turned out to be one of the worst ideas I’ve ever had, but overall it was an unqualified success.”

RedOctane’s biz dev guy, Dave Noble, said: "It was brilliant to see the rock star poses transferred from the living rooms of the nation to the country's greatest stages, and we're extremely grateful to Gibson and Live Nation, organisers of the Download Festival, for helping us make Guitar Hero players' dreams come true."

Check out these pics from the weekend and get practicing your air guitar poses, as SPOnG is assured that RedOctane is sure to be giving you more opportunities to rock out with Guitar Hero at more of this summer’s big music festivals and events. As soon as we hear more on dates and details we’ll let you know.
