Play Live at Castle Donington with Guitar Hero

RedOctane offer you chance to rock the Download festival.

Castle Donington. The UK's spiritual home of metal. The mere name strikes fear into those who were not born to rock!

SPOnG has mixed memories of Monsters of Rock gigs at Donington from back in the day. Yes, there were true moments of heavy metal history - Iron Maiden, Guns 'n' Roses, David Lee Roth, Kiss - but the main thing we remember is the 'glass bottle of piss' threat.

These days, thankfully, it seems the assembled rock devotees only throw empty plastic bottles containing no urine, which is either progress or no fun, depending upon which side of the rock fence you're banging your head. Plus this year, we also note that Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses and The Prodigy are playing, which means there's guaranteed to be a moshpit the size and ferocity of which has never been seen before in these isles. We braved it for Sabbath last year. We'll do the same this year for Guns N' Roses. Providing Axl turns up, that is.

What the hell has this got to do with videogames though? No, you haven't logged into Kerrang.com by mistake. If you ever dreamed of rocking out onstage with your idols, then RedOctane may well give you that opportunity with a once-in-a-lifetime Guitar Hero promo they are running at this weekend's Download festival.

Festival attendees are being offered the opportunity to play Guitar Hero on both the Gibson/MySpace stage and in the Snickers Bowl, which SPOnG checked out last year, and can report is perhaps the best 'chill out' area we've ever seen at a music festival. You get to sit there and watch some of the world's greatest skaters and BMX riders do their stuff in the bowl, whilst you enjoy a sip of Pimms*.

Live Guitar Hero sets will also be displayed on the big screen in the main arena between the main acts, so it really is the chance to 'play' Donington. Tight black leather, wrap-around shades and pasted-on rock grimace essential!

You can book a slot now (which are being dished out on a first-come, first-served basis and can be held for one or two players) by simply emailing guitarhero@bhpr.co.uk. Get practicing. And if you don't own Guitar Hero or know of someone who does, then what are you doing? Go and buy it immediately.

Not bad. I'll be rocking it at Download this Friday - can't go on Saturday and see the almighty Metallica due to me going to a wedding and all (not mine though... that I know of!) - but Tool are headlining and that's more than enough for me. I shall check itself before it wrecks itself.

The view of rock and roll as something "anti-establishment" and revolutionary is quaint and anachronistic. What are you some kind of hippie? Neil Young?

Young people today aren't bothered about politics, or worried that they are being exploited by rich people. They just want to have a good time. And what better way for them to have a good time than being charged $100 to go into a field with no adequate toilet facilities, and be forced to pay scandalous prices for poor food and bottled tap-water while unimaginative dick-wads perform bland corporate approved music with dire corporate approved lyrics about how much they hate themselves, and want to die.

Their corporate sponsors want them to die too. It's a fact that Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain have all made corporate America richer since they died than they ever did when they were alive. And once we manage extend copyright in perpetuity, they'll make us even more. Now if only Jack White or Bono would f**king overdose. That'd really do something for shareholder value. Pete Doherty less so, because his songs are so s**te, everyone stupid enough to buy them has already done so.
