SPOnG had the privilege of catching up with John Carmack out at E3, acknowledged genius, co-owner and technical director of id Software, and all-round nice guy.
In technical terms, Carmack has always been several jumps ahead of the games industry, famously releasing the Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake engines as shareware, and spawning a modding scene which saw the first-person shooter become the most popular games genre.
Carmack told us about id’s next project (a rare in-house development with an all-new IP); the innovative new technology he has developed which will debut in the forthcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, published by Activision and developed by new UK outfit Splash Damage; and spoke of the relative merits of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
