Sega announces Game Boy Advance titles in development
Sega’s mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, is making the cross-platform jump in one of the first three games to be released for the Advance. Yes, you heard correctly, Sega has stated that Sonic Adventure Advance will be available in the Autumn. It is likely that Sonic Advance will mirror the game-play of the Dreamcast version, but play with a 2D perspective. The original Sonic Adventure was an amalgamation of different game types and played differently with each of the seven characters. Combine a variety of game-play with an exploration mode and fast action sequences and the GameBoy Advance could have a million seller on its hands. We recently reported that Sega was intending to release its killer games on the Advance and the PlayStation 2, and now we know of three titles in the pipeline for the handheld.

The very first Sega game for the Advance will be the addictive puzzler Chu Chu Rocket (chu means mouse in Japanese). This title was the first console on-line game ever and was given away free to any Dreamcast user that registered with Dreamarena, Sega’s Internet portal. Up to four-players will be able to play Chu Chu simultaneously on GBA using the link-up lead. The player that manages to save the most mice wins. Players can place three arrows on the playing field that change the direction that mice travel in, if a fourth arrow is put down, the first disappears. Arrows are used to direct the mice towards your own base but other players can interrupt your plans and re-direct the mice. Occasionally, cats wander onto the screen and if they reach your base they cause massive penalties for you. Chu Chu is great fun because your playing tactics are always adapting to other players actions and invasion threats. There will be a dedicated puzzle mode as well, where you only have so many moves to clear the level.

Finally, Puyo Puyo is to be released on the Game Boy Advance. You might know this game from one of its other guises, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. Puyo Puyo is a competitive 2-player game where if you join four beans of the same colour together they disappear. Any beans above will fall and if they join up with more beans long combinations can occur. These moves will send loads of colourless beans over to your opponent’s screen and victory could be yours. Let the puzzling battles begin!
