Wii Hands On Impressions: Super Mario Galaxy

We take Mario for a run through the stars

So here we are with Super Mario Galaxy. Very cool? Well, yes. We've waited for this game since Space World 2000 when it was called Mario 128. And that's quite a long time.

Upon being handed the controller, anyone who has played the previous two 3D outings will feel instantly at home. Triples jumps, wall kicks, quick turn somersaults, are all there and as point perfect as ever.

And that just with the nunchuck bit. Along with your basic jumping and butt dropping the nunchuck also affords Mario the ability to perform a bit of a whirling attack just by giving it a bit of a shake. Quite handy really. But it's the WiiMote that really makes the difference.

The remote moves a glowing star thing on the screen indicating where it's being pointed at any one time letting you reach into the world and play with Mario's surrounding for fun and, of course, game progress, bumping Goombas and the like so Mario can more easily dispatch them is a delight. The best use of it we saw however, was actually getting to use it to aid Mario directly. First you must move everyone's favourite plumber onto a rubber plant of sorts, then using the remote, grasp it and stretch it in any direction you like, enabling you to fling Mario around the different worlds. We almost wish we could have high fived the little blighteroni after successfully completing the task. It's been at least 10 hours since we've had that much fun playing with our selves.

All in all its a very natural progression for the series and an excellent use of the new device. The graphics, while of course not exactly (ZOMG WTF!?) stunning, are classic Mario made even crisper and shinier by the zippy new Wii hardware and are just wonderfully appealing.

The whole space background around lush, natural looking planetoids is really very unique and just fun to see (lucky thing for all those poor sods who had to wait in line). So, not that we have to tell you this, make sure to go and pre-order this game now, even if it's not a launch title you'll be sure to want it the instant it's available. And as ever, feel free to discuss this in the forums below. Cause really, that's what they're there for.
