Summary

Rage 2 might just be a match made in heaven. Avalanche Studios, the team behind the likes of the Just Cause series, brings a mastery of open world gaming to the table while id Software, the company that made one of the pinnacles in first-person shooting, 2016's Doom, brings breakneck gunslinging action to the party.

In a future where an asteroid has wiped out 80 per cent of humanity, you play as the last ranger trying to bring justice to the wasteland. As Walker, you've been robbed of your home and left for dead. Meanwhile, The Authority intends to make what's left of this blasted land its own. Will you be able to stop them?

The action is fast and furious. When you sprint, you really sprint and yes, sure, you might opt to take a spot of cover every now and then, but for the most part you'll be better served by legging it around the environments and keeping the bullets flying.

While this might be a Mad Max style future, the technology's a bit more advanced than Mel Gibson might reasonably have expected. As you go, you'll upgrade your abilities with moves such as a ground-pound that lets you momentarily deny gravity before slamming down and creating a shockwave that sends your enemies flying.

Vehicles play a big part in Rage 2. You'll thrash around the world in vehicles ranging from monster trucks to gyrocopters - but watch out, a lot of them are armed and very dangerous. Like the first-person bulletfests, the vehicle combat is deliriously over the top.

The environment itself is no schlub, either. It ranges from heat-blasted deserts to lethal swamps to lush forest, and it's surprisingly atmospheric. It needs taking back, and only you can do it...
