Summary

At a glance it's difficult to pin down exactly what Left Alive is. It looks like a Metal Gear Solid game, but it's set in the world of the mech-centric Front Mission. Those are two quite different types of game, but you'll see a little of both in Left Alive, and a lot more beside.

At it's core, this is a third-person cover shooter. You play as a lone fighter deep in enemy territory with a deadly mission and not a lot of support. If you start treating it like Gears of War you'll quickly run into trouble, though.

Ammo and resources are scarce so you'll have to do a bit of crafting to get what you need and watch your supplies carefully. Discretion will often be the better part of valor, although you're sure to get into at least a few firefights during your time with the game. Interesting kit such as radar grenades will help when it comes to staying stealthy.

It also has elements of narrative games like Telltale's The Walking Dead in there, with branching dialogue trees that will sculpt your experience.

And, of course, there are Front Mission's 'wanzers' - giant walking tanks with a ton of firepower - stomping round the game. Often, you'll have to attack them on foot or avoid them altogether. Every now and then, though, you'll hop into one so that you can at least try to blow your enemies to smithereens.

Left Alive is an ambitious blend of shoot-'em-up, stealth-'em-up, RPG and mech combat game - a juicy combo that's intriguing in an age of high concept, elevator pitch releases.
