Square’s Suzuki pledges continued multi-platform support but says SCE might change everything
Square President Nao Suzuki has made some interesting comments to Japanese gaming gospel Famitsu, talking frankly and possibly without any pressure for the first time.

Following the news that Sony Computer Entertainment had acquired 19 percent of the entire Square company, there were well-founded fears that Square would be under pressure to discontinue its multi-platform drive that had seen the company courting favour from Microsoft and Nintendo.

“PlayStation is an extremely popular platform,” Suzuki said. “So we don't see any disadvantage in supporting it. We are planning to continue pursuing opportunities to supply games on portable systems like Nintendo's.”

However, Suzuki suggested that should Sony make any changes to its hardware line-up, this situation might have to change. “We're still progressing with those plans. We don't believe the portable and home console markets conflict with each other. If SCE decides to release a portable machine, though, that's a different story. For the time being, though, our stance towards Game Boy Advance and WonderSwan has not changed at all. What happens next depends on the hardware developers.”

Poor old Square! The company should be one of the biggest players in the global industry and at the very least financially secure. A brief foray into the world of movies has landed Square in serious financial strife. It might mean the sacrifice of the long-term goal of the company: Cross-platform online RPG gaming.
