SPOnG loves skateboarding - and by extension (or, for the non-skaters in the office, osmosis) we all love skateboarding games.

This means, basically, that we love Activision’s Tony Hawks games and welcome the news of the latest in the series, to be called Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground.

The title's a timely one as the game really does need to prove itself, what with the new competition from EA’s SKATE, which we can't wait to finally get a proper hands-on with in the near future.

Activision tells us that new features in the game include "freedom to define [your] character, story and style based on the choices [you] make" plus you will also be able to create your own skate videos and your own skate lounge online.

Hmm, the character stuff sounds pretty much run of the mill to us and the skate video stuff is also included (and done very well) in SKATE. As for creating a ‘skate lounge’ online. Do any skaters out there actually care about a skate-themed social networking feature in a Tony Hawk’s game? Or would they rather be out. You know, actually socialising and skating with their mates?

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is due later this year on (breathe in…) 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP and Nintendo DS (…breathe out).
