In an invite-only CES presentation earlier today SCEA's Peter Dille announced that the company has already shipped over one million PlayStation 3 units into North American retail.

So that’s where those Best Buy PS3 mountains have come from – not legions of irate eBay scalpers returning PS3’s after all!

Initial manufacturing hiccups aside, this makes Playstation 3 the fastest selling home console Sony has ever launched. In comparison Microsoft sold 600,000 360s in the period between their November 2005 launch through to the second week in January.

"SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA in an official press release.

"The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming."

Tretton added, "Reaching the one million mark for PS3 is the first of many major milestones for us as we head into a new year. Even more impressive, is that we were able to accomplish this feat while successfully managing two other gaming platforms--PS2 and PSP."

At his CES talk, Peter Dille also claimed that Sony hopes to ship 6 million PS3s worldwide by the end of March, when the PS3 will be launching across Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia/Asia.

WOW! What a speech... Lets start by inflating our egos even further by saying how impressive we are at every turn. (I mean for a giant multinational corporation to sustain just two old and mature product lines that happily sell themselves, whilst launching an awe inspiring third... who would of thought they could pull it off!)

Then lets chat cr*p about how just because we make and push into retail a lot of consoles, somehow that's proof customers love the PS brand and want HD! Sorry but your forgetting people have to BUY the console and your need to quote SALES figures for this to be in any way relevant.

Finally, lets spin some figures and make it look like we are better than the competition. Errr, yeah you did ship more into retain than M$, but wait weren't people trying to buy the 360 and couldn't rather than it just sitting on shelves? Oh and don't forget how they didn't f*ck over Europe etc. so were actually selling in more territories than you, and I bet if you add up the OVERALL units shipped M$ would be winning!

Man I wish someone would just kill all the a**eh*le Sony execs and get in some people who cared more about gaming, then maybe they could just concentrate on make an awesome gaming rig and the PS3 wouldn't be the marketing sh*t it is!

p.s. I didn't even mention how the Wii happens to also be sh*tting all over you Sony! Oh wait, now I have. =)

Now here is where I get a bit up in arms. The 360 sold 600 000 units, yet the PS3 ships 1 000 000 units and now we're all tooting the Sony horn. We've all been on the same gaming block long enough to know the evils of "shipped" and "sold". Last week I visited 3 rather large big-box stores (Future Shop, Wal-Mart). At each there was a minimum of three PS3's on the shelf, and a maximum of 5. I know for 100% as fact then that at the very minimum, Sony has sold 999 989 and not 1 000 000. Doing some magical mathematics, I can assume that the 1 000 000 is not at all accurate, and is probably closer to the 360 number of 600 000.

it was a week...after the second shipment.

Let's just settle on one thing whatever number Sony is making up to boost itself, being sold or shipped. you can be confident Nintendo sold double that for real and probably more.

in all fairness M$ would probably have the same tactics in reverse positions.

I feel no pity for Sony though, the days of getting away with statements like that are long gone. People are so much more aware now.

On the somewhat smaller sites like these, yes people are more aware. On the big sites like IGN who cater to the respectively fanboy-segments, not so much me thinks...

Anyways, Sony gives good material for Commander Zorg at ukr to go bananas and give me a good giggle for the day...and the circle is complete.
