Sega dropped the price of the Dreamcast console today, to less than £100.

The announcement spread through the retail world quickly this lunchtime, informing retailers that the move would be effective immediately.

Sega’s attempt to entice UK consumers failed last September, when the company slashed the full-price hardware from £199 to £149. But the second price cut in just five months will be accompanied by further software support from Sega. A two-figure price point is one that could attract impulse buyers, but the recent announcement, stating that Dreamcast production would be terminated by the end of March will act as yet another deterrent. Sega’s gesture is unlikely to boost sales of Dreamcast significantly, but COO of Sega Europe, Kazotoshi Miyake, remained enthusiastic. "The new £99 price point for Dreamcast is a great buy for the gaming public. Our software schedule for the next year also maintains Sega's position as the world's finest developer and confirms our status as the most consistent and innovative content providers in the gaming world."

Sega is also set to release a library of budget games that consist of early A-list titles, including House of the Dead 2 and Soul Calibur. The budget price point remains unconfirmed. We will bring more news on Sega’s ups and downs as we get it.
