N-Gage – Nintendo not worried

Harrison on Nokia threat.

As Nokia fights a public relations fire on the launch of its mobile phone-cum-gaming machine the N-Gage, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president for marketing George Harrison has spoken of the apathy the Japanese manufacturer of the Game Boy Advance has for the newcomer.

“The price point takes it out of the reach of most gamers," said Harrison. "We don't view it as a big threat right now. Our view is a multifunction device is not the solution.”

A strange comment given that a solution is usually presented to remedy a problem. And at this point in time, no one really has a problem with the state of portable gaming.

Although Nintendo’s GBA SP is nothing more that a cut-down, lifestyle-friendly portable SNES, it achieves a level of gaming that greatly pleases the system’s owners. It is also predicted that Nintendo will shift 20 million SP's this financial year alone.

It’s likely that the looming PSP from Sony will immediately consume the as-yet untapped upper end of the portable gaming market - if that level within the market exists at all.
