Summary
One of the most beloved of the Legend of Zelda games, Wind Waker, has been dusted off, overhauled and brought bang up to date for an HD release on the Wii U.
The plot won't come as much of a surprise to anyone who has played a Zelda game before - a young boy named Link's sister is kidnapped and, helped by a band of pirates led by the sassy Tetra, he goes on a quest to save her. And, perhaps, the world...
What does set it apart from other games in the series is the fact that Link lives on a tiny island in the Great Ocean and must navigate the world by sea, using his boat - The King of Red Lions. Armed with the ability to control the wind, off he sets to battle monsters, solve puzzles and generally do some adventuring. The world is teeming with expertly-crafted dungeons and missions and quests set on the many islands dotted about. The genius of the puzzling is not in the complexity of the environment-based puzzles themselves so much as the way they're expertly intergrated into the world.
Combat is perhaps the finest in the Zelda series, with a finely tuned counter-attack system that can be the key to taking down even the largest foe.
There have been a couple of changes and tweaks. The most obvious is the HD tune up, bringing the game into stunning HD. The Wii U Gamepad also improves things, making control and inventory management easier than ever. Another, seemingly more minor enhancement, is the inclusion of a swift sail ability that enables players to travel quickly from location to location. It seems like a small thing, but players of the original are sure to appreciate it.
Newcomers and vets alike can expect Wind Waker HD to be the definitive version of this Nintendo classic.
