Port Royale 3: Pirates and Merchants is - as its name suggests the third in the Port Royale historical business simulation series. Set in the pirate infested trade routes in the The Caribbean during the 17th Century, the huge trading, warring and political powers of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands fight over their colonies. The gamer takes the role of fresh-faced ship's captain in his quest for primacy in the New World.
The game comes with two routes to power: they can play as an Adventurer or as a Trader. The latter role sees that player using brain and strategic skills in order to build up material wealth and the economic power required to grow and take-over territory. This also requires the player to create and hold trade routes, while also building up industries and developing their colonies' wealth and economic structures.
The Adventurer has a different route to power. They must fight a long, arduous and challenging campaign to conquer the seas. Rather than economic and strategic planning, the Adventuer must triumph in the arts of invasion, piracy, bounty hunting, and raiding, while not overlooking of course the need to maintain the wealth and health of the colonies.
Aside from Campaign modes there is also the mixed mode of Free Play that enables the player to Adventure and Trade in order to create their own unique and exciting challenges and narratives.
For the first time in the series there is also a Multiplayer mode for up to four players to battle and compete over Local Area Network or the Internet for global enjoyment.
With this Gold Edition, the player gets the added bonus of the official expansion pack, Treasure Island!
Patrician IV: Gold Edition
The Patrician series has come a long way since its Amiga and Atari ST debut in 1992. It may have been seven years since the last iteration, but Patrician IV shows that the strategy simulation franchise is still very much alive. Developed by Gaming Minds Studios a company created with members of the team behind the very first title this promises to build upon the solid reputation of its predecessors and take it to the next level.
As a young merchant in the area of the Baltic and North Sea during the late Middle Ages, you begin your journey as a small stall trader and must rise through the merchant ranks to become the greatest seller in all of Europe. The better you deal trade, the more fame and wealth you get, allowing you to not only expand your market empire but also influence the shape of your surroundings - from towns and small villages to huge capital cities.
A supple and demand-driven economy means you have to hunt for the best quality goods, and react to what people want from your stalls and services. Soon, you'll have to think big and head out to the high seas in order to form trading routes with other Hanseatic cities. Competing interests, political turmoil, disease, weather conditions, piracy and royalty can all affect your profits.
Compete against eight computer-controlled rival merchants to rise to the top of the Hanseatic League, in this strategy simulation that focuses on a area of history far less traveled.
