Summary

These days a piece of hardware isn't really a games machine if it doesn't have some violent little invertebrates trying to do damage to each other on it. Or, to put it another way, a Worms game. With Worms Battlegrounds Team17 takes its flagship series and brings it to the next generation of home consoles.

The game is an expanded version of Worms Clan Wars, which landed on PC in August 2013, and brings something a little different to the franchise - a plot. The single-player story stars Tara Pinkle, a somewhat odd sort who's a member of the Historical Hooligans society, an organisation that likes to steal rare artefacts from tribes and museums. Pinkle enlists the help of your team of worms to raid one such museum, with the exhibits from different eras serving as your battlegrounds.

As with any Worms game, the heart of the action is sidescrolling combat in which the different sides take it in turns to attempt to do all sorts of damage to each other with an exotic array of weaponry.

Of course, it wouldn't be Worms without a robust multiplayer mode, and for the first time Team17 has provided fully featured clan support and league play.

The stats are looking good, too. There are over 200 individual customisation options, four improved classes and 65 weapons and utilities, with no less than 10 of those being brand new!
