The game makes full use of the Pirates of the Caribbean universe with the ability for the player to interact with more than 70 characters – both new and classical – from one of the movie world’s most successful franchises.

These characters will be encountered over 20 different levels from each of the movies but rendered in the classic LEGO style.

While as ever with LEGO titles, puzzle solving and piece collecting are the orders of the day, in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean there is also combat to contend with. This comes mainly in the form of intense sword fights in which the full force of the environment must be used.

Everything is held together in a seamless and engaging narrative by use of cutscenes in which everyone's favourite scenes from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are brought to life using minifigures and the kind of humour gamers have comes to expect from LEGO video games.

As well as single-player story mode, there is also two-player co-op wherein a gamer can join a friend for drop-in, drop-out local cooperative action.

3DS owners can also instigate on the move combat sessions using the handheld's Street Pass feature.

There is also a Freeplay mode in which gamers building a collection of characters throughout the game and use the characters’ abilities to unlock previously unavailable areas.
