Summary

The Ar Tonelico series has a lot of love around the world - particularly in its domestic market, Japan - for its colourful design and engaging Japanese RPG storyline. After the first in the trilogy rocked the role-playing world on PlayStation 2 back in 2006, we now come to the end of the series with Ar Tonelico Qoga.

You play as two Reyvateils (humanoids) in the land of Sol Cluster - a kingdom ruled by an organisation called Clustania - to fight against injustice and to accomplish their goal in meeting Aoto. You see, this Clustania group isn’t all it’s cracked up to be - their ultimate goal is to enslave humans and rule the world. So obviously you can’t let that happen.

The combat in Ar Tonelico Qoga is quite different to past titles in the series, opting for a more action-based system that allows players to directly control the character. Run around the battlefield and attack at will, then perform magic by executing chain combos to the rhythm of the music. The better your performance, the stronger your battle magic.

Levelling up and raising your characters’ profiles is done using the unique Cosmosphere system, that takes you deep into the Reyvateil’s subconscious to understand the characters you’re controlling and to build their skills. How you choose to grow your experience and where you decide to take your characters dramatically changes the outcome of the story too, with over two hours worth of endings to discover.
