Who fancies a modern retelling of a classic folk tale? Of course you do, they're most fun! The story surrounding Muramasa: The Demon Blade is one such folk originating from Japan, and features many locations and settings that would make a Samurai shogun feel right at home.

The graphics are wonderfully rendered, and if you're thinking you've seen that art style before you'll be pleased to know that the game comes courtesy of the creators of Odin-Sphere. But unlike the PS2 RPG, Muramasa is a 2D side-scrolling action game, where you must fight your enemies or die trying.

Muramasa's two main protagonists all have a troubling time ahead of them - Kisuke is a fugitive on the run for a crime he doesn't remember, searching for a katana; while Momohime becomes possessed by the spirit of the evil swordsman Jinkuro Izuna and flees her castle to accomplish a dark mission. Kisuke and Momohime's paths cross with the demon swordsmith Muramasa.

Two unique paths for each character to clear the levels, 100 swords to collect and level up, and an impressive mashup of anime-esque 2D animations and 3D backgrounds makes for a game that stays true to the folk tale's traditions while looking contemporary and maintaining mesmerising gameplay. << less
