Cybernetic fighter A.D.A.M. finds himself in the Tower of Purgatory, where discarded battle androids are sent to fight out eternity. Increasingly self-aware, he aims to rise through the tower's hazard-filled stages to find the answers every sentient being seeks: Who am I, why am I? He must accrue new weapons and technologies and use them against the increasingly tough guards within the edifice as he rises through the levels.

Rengoku has been designed to maximise the capabilities of the new PSP hardware, with the hardware's wireless technology allowing for multi-player modes for up to four people, including the ability to trade items with other players or compete in death-match tournaments within the tower's corridors.
