Summary

The concept of the 2D, side-scrolling platformer is as old as the hills and, by today's standards, pretty tired. But the genre is still the staple diet for the Game Boy Advance. So how could you inject a bit of spice into it and make a game that bit more appealing than the rest of the similar titles on the shelf? Put a pseudo 3D spin on it, a la Viewtiful Joe? Even better, throw in a pair of retro style 3D glasses and put a real 3D spin on it. Which is exactly what Digital Eclipse has done with this latest film tie-in.

Spy Kids 3D's story follows that of the recent film, which, ironically, is based around a video game. The kids' new arch-nemesis, an evil inventor known as The Toymaker, is about to unleash his new, all-powerful, kid-hypnotising game on the masses, and so it's up to hero Juni to save the day. To make matters worse, his sister Carmen is trapped inside.

The game itself sees players guide Juni through an assortment of different worlds, defeating enemies and bosses, as he attempts to thwart The Toymaker and rescue his sister. Along the way, a host of cool gadgetry is at his disposal, as is an array of special moves, including the likes of Berzerker Stomp, Extended Jump, Triple Kick, and Soul Stealer. The key to success lies in rescuing a number of allies - who will be familiar to anyone who's seen any of the Spy Kids films - and who subsequently go on to help you out in the final showdown.

There are 12 levels in total, plus a further three pod racer-style racing levels as an added extra. As mentioned before, there's also the inclusion of a 3D bonus element that allows you to unlock special images as you progress through the game - stick on the bundled free glasses and...it's like...wow...man!
