Summary
One of the first titles to veer away from the gaming side of things and take advantage of the Xbox's PC-like capabilities, Xbox Music Mixer offers a host of audio-related utilities, designed to enhance the musical aspect of the machine. Developed with budding singers (yes, it comes bundled with a microphone), VJs and party hosts in mind, the software enables you to personalise your music experience with, amongst other things, PC media sharing, customised soundtracks and visual accompaniments.
At the heart of things is an interactive media player, which gives you the chance to try your hand at a bit of virtual DeeJaying. As such, you can mix, match and shuffle your own music collection, whilst benefiting from a few handy little tools, in a similar way to Native Instruments' Tractor DJ software for the PC. At the same time, you can also enhance the clubbing experience with a selection of 2D and 3D on-screen visualisers.
What's surely going to be the most popular aspect to Xbox Music Mixer is the built-in Karaoke utility. Over a dozen of the most requested Karaoke songs are included for you to sing along to, complete with on-screen lyrics rolling by, and there's even a smart little tool that EQs/phases out vocal tracks from your favourite tunes, so you can sing along to them too.
Also included in the application is support for file sharing, enabling you to transfer music and images from your PC to your Xbox, as well as download new music, visualisers and Karaoke tracks via Xbox Live. And if that's not enough, there's also the inclusion of a photo viewer, which enables you to liven up the otherwise tedious process of flicking through photos by synching a slide show to customised soundtracks, visual effects and even narrative.
