The hugely successful Dragon Ball Z phenomenon, which now has roots not just in TV, but in video game as well, is continuing to grow to Pokemon-sized proportions in the UK. More specifically, GBA’s Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku proved a popular release and so Atari has released a sequel, set to bring the 2D role-player back into full swing.

Just when the Z Warriors thought the struggle against evil was over, a new evil approaches. In this next episode of the DBZ adventure, players will take on the role of Trunks, Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, and Goku as they journey from the Trunks Saga to Cell Games and prepare to do battle with the mighty Cell himself.

Akin to SNES role-playing games such as Final Fantasy IV, V and VI, the DBZ game world is presented in solid 2D and has the aforementioned protagonists exploring myriad mazes and fighting endless battles with Cell’s unpleasant minions, not to mention a few native beasts.

But perhaps the most significant improvement over the original GBA game is Goku II’s longevity. The first game was already a respectable size, but this instalment is four times larger and features some 200 maps to access and explore.

It’s an epic, there’s no denying that and it’s going to take a little more than a spare five minutes on the bus to finish this behemoth. << less
