Summary

First-person shooting games have always been popular, ever since the first appearance of 3D-capable home computers and consoles, but only in recent years has the genre really come to life. Titles such as Doom and Quake set a benchmark that all succeeding software houses would struggle to beat. However, the creation of Unreal gave its rivals some harsh competition. Originally produced on PC, Unreal has now made its way onto Sony’s much-vaunted PlayStation 2 console.

The time has come to prove you are the best. You and your team of "bots" (virtual teammates) face off in the first person against the deadliest warrior bots in the galaxy. Do you have the skill to earn the title of Unreal Grand Master? Challenge your friends to the most spine-rattling combat seen on the newly-released console.

This particular conversion has indeed been developed to take full advantage of the console’s abilities. To help demonstrate this fact, over fifty levels of chaotic battles have been produced, each one a world of its own. Environments are varied and will take you to locations such as space castles, Egyptian tombs and submarines.

There are four game types that naturally include the most popular modes of play in the genre, Capture the Flag and Death Match. Of course, Unreal Tournament has been designed with multi-player functions in mind, so a multi-tap is an essential purchase for 4-player split-screen events. Ten awesome weapons give the game a real sense of destructive gameplay, featuring chainsaws, rocket launchers and impact hammers that pound the opposition into mulch. As usual, cunning AI is present in single player mode, but playing against friends will highlight the most interesting and challenging aspects of gameplay, making it a truly enthralling experience. << less
