Summary

When the original This Is Football appeared in 1999, Sony insisted on being taken seriously as far as footy titles were concerned. In a crowded market, already awash with the various ISS and FIFA titles, This Is Football performed well, but not brilliantly. Worshippers at the altar of EA and Konami pointed their collective finger and laughed. With This Is Football 2, Sony is back with a genuinely new and improved game.

As well as the ever-present international teams and competitions, there is now the option of playing a full domestic football season, whichever country's leagues you may choose, incorporating the relevant European competitions, as well as all the domestic cup competitions. These matches run concurrently with league matches, creating a real sense of involvement with the team's fortunes as the season progresses.

Previously, most other football titles have focused on the top divisions throughout the world, such as the English Premiership, Spain's Primera Liga and Italy's Serie A. This Is Football 2 also offers the option of selecting teams from outside the top divisions. Stunning brand new stadiums are also featured, and are always full to capacity. Now, that never happens at Crewe Alexandra!

The emphasis on authenticity and detail has been applied to the game-play. Players not only look more realistic than last time out, with motion captured animation detail, but they also move more rapidly, and have quicker reactions to commands resulting in a more free flowing, enjoyable experience. This Is Football 2 is definitely worth a look, but it’s going to have to play a blinder to become the king of football titles.
