Summary

Endearing yourself to a family of mobsters by doing their dirty work is something of a first for a videogame, however this is the basis of Grand Theft Auto. Take to the streets on foot, steal a car, any car, and get yourself to the pay-phone to receive your instructions regarding the next dirty deed. Take to the streets on foot, steal a car, any car, and get yourself to the pay-phone to receive your instructions regarding the next dirty deed. Then, and this is the real fun in Grand Theft Auto, get out on the road and cause as much mayhem as you like, on your way to getting the job done. Some kind of road rage takes you over as you mow down innocent pedestrians. Indeed, steal a police car, run over the former occupant, and the cops will be on your case. The radio station that plays whilst you’re racing around the city will let you know when the feds are coming for you. This may be the ideal time for a fresh paint job and some false plates.

This mission-based title caused such a furore when it was released at the beginning of 1998, it even got a mention in the Houses of Parliament. Some guff about the effects of violence in videogames and moral standards being on the decline, I seem to recall. Result? Grand Theft Auto sold by the shed-load, and deservedly so. Getting from A to B has never been so much fun.

Experience for yourself every classic car chase ever seen. Race at breakneck speed through an immense living city, out-running and out-witting rival gang members, mercenaries, hired killers and an entire police force. Drive dozens of varied around three of America’s toughest cities. Only the best drivers will be able to tame the fastest cars. Only the smartest will know all the short-cuts and the whereabouts of the hottest wheels. Only the toughest will be able to take on the world and finish the job like a professional.
