Much that was right about Worms was wrong with this sequel. In an attempt to answer criticisms about the diminutive size of the characters in the first outing, Team17 made the worms bigger in this version. The result was that they lost much of their charm, s they grew from sprites into mini cartoon characters. As a result, there wasn't enough room on screen for the action. Sadly, although it was a PC only release, it wasn't possible for owners of more powerful machines to increase the visible area of the playfield.
The simple but addictive gameplay of the first game was complicated by the addition of extra game options. The easy to use power indicator, used to tell the strength of your shots was transformed into a bizarre cartoon bubble effect that was almost impossible to use. Exciting ideas that were discussed by the programmers during the early stages of development were dropped in order to make an 'on-time' delivery.
Although well programmed and attractive, Worms 2 is a sequel by numbers, designed to exploit the incredible success of the original game. << less
