Summary

Nintendo genius Shigeru Miyamoto has overseen many a classic title to emerge from his R&D department. But he will always be known and praised primarily for his innovation and gameplay with the Mario franchise. The success of the series led to the production of Super Mario Land on Nintendo’s newly released GameBoy in the late eighties.

While there have been many Mario titles released, Super Mario Land leans more towards the original Mario Brothers as opposed to Mario 2 and 3. This may be due to the new handheld’s technological limitations, but any game based on a classic is bound to be of some interest, and in this case, not without reason. Mario Land takes place across four unique worlds, each divided into a number of sub-levels. The infamous collectibles of the original, such as coins, flowers, mushrooms and stars have remained intact. There are end-of-level bosses on each world, all posing different threats, meaning you are challenged to adopt different strategies where appropriate. As far as controls are concerned, the controller section of the Game Boy is very similar to that of the NES, and as such, should be relatively simple to get to grips with. Unfortunately, the lifespan of a single game is heavily reduced due to the game’s lack of difficulty. With no prior experience, Mario Land could still be finished within a day. On the positive side of the game, there is a fantastic level of replayability that will keep the attention of players hooked until exhaustion. It’s a great game that's a worthy addition to Nintendo’s whopping portfolio.
