Ok so Mass Effect is going to be released for the PC and they have just relased details of a rather interesting new anti-piracy measure. These include the need for online
activation, potentially limited installs and hardware changes, and a
process running in the background, verifying your copy of the game to
an EA online server every ten days - purportedly locking you out if it doesn't do so every 10 days.

The community is pissed. In the past few hours, there have been several
hundred anti-anti-piracy posts in their forums, and some boycotting of the
title from annoyed consumers.

Where do you stand?

Hi Ben, thanks for this heads-up. Before I make any comment, I'll look at the detail...

My initial stance is that people who pirate games should allow other people to come around to their house and walk off with their television, freezer and anything else in order to monetise them at CraCkConvertors.

Fair's fair after all.

However, whether the means justify the ends does require me to look at the detail.

Cheers

People who want to get illegal copies of a game are pissed off. Nightmare. Not sure if this is the best way of going about stopping piracy tho

On a wider issue something needs to be done to help the pc games industry as piracy is rife and its killing the big budget games.

The people who made Crysis are no longer going to produce PC exclusive games because of piracy in the PC market.

I think the trouble with this software is that it really won't stop piracy at all, or even slow it down very much. Most people who pirate games will need to get a crack no matter what system in implemented. So within about 3 or 4 days there will be a securROM crack on the market.

So if you ask me what the better way to stop piracy is? Well I firstly think you need give people a good reason to WHY they should buy a full retail copy. San Filippo makes this wonderful post on the UDN.... [i]

"....is it [the DRM] going to increase revenues. Pissing off customers won't increase revenues, and it seems like for the most part these things are hacked in a few days anyway.

But I feel kinda the same way about piracy as I do about the problem of Gamestop etc (that is, used sales taking away from developer income) If we really want people to not hack our games or trade them in after they play through them once, then we need to really have a focus on creating compelling online content that will keep them wanting more, and keep them playing in an environment where you need to be online to get the most out of the game.

Nobody (from what I've heard anyway) is hacking WoW and playing for free, and I'd wager that GameStop isn't a huge threat to games like Rock Band where you just want to keep downloading songs and playing.

Probably same goes for CoD4: sure you can hack it and play the SP campaign, but much of the appeal comes from playing online so I don't think people are going to be trading in as many copies or playing hacked versions where online MP isn't an option.

If we had Achievements in more PC games as well where you had to be online with a valid copy for them to register, I think people would naturally feel like they were missing out on a big part of the game if they were playing a hacked version...."

I can only agree with San here. It would be much better to reward people who do have the actual copy, rather than locking your software.
