Well, considering that GAME have a deal with Metaboli, it looks like they're not counting themselves out of the race entirely and already have that base covered. I think GAME mainly bought GameStation because they have a higher re-sell market share whereas i would tend to buy new games from GAME.

E distribution is a nice idea but I do believe people like the physical aspects of buying games much better. Cracking open that fresh seal and exploring a game.
Valve have shown what problems E.D can have, with Half Life 2. Payment via this kind of service is always a problem and not as good as the Real McCoy.

Yer your right, waiting for a game to be delivered from a website or going to a shop on a Friday & picking up your new release reading the manual on the train on the way home & having that anticipation of playing a title you've really!! been looking 4ward to is a massive part of gaming (for me anyway). plus I love it when games developers do the special edition cases & tins with artwork books, All of this adds to the gaming experience. I had a chipped xbox1 for a while & getting copied games or downloading them really killed that aspect of anticipation & build up. I think downloading full games is a s**tty idea & one that only really benefits the developers & software houses.
