18 months?
The only thing I see in 18 months is perhaps a revision to the motherboard.
Even though by now they've probably already revised it a few times (like they did with the PS2)
2 years is FAR too short of a life cycle for a console, and considering Sony's stated expectations (10 years? yeah right) I can't imagine they're even thinking about releasing the PS4 in such a short time.

I don't see it as that unlikely that Sony won't release a 'New' console in that kind of time frame... however it does come down to the definition of 'new'.
It certainly won't be 'new' in the way PS3 is to the PS2, I'm thinking that we're likely to see iPod style updates on a regular basis, so would think of a rumoured PS4 as being an update from the PS3 as the 5th Gen iPod is from the 4th Gen iPod.
It has been suggested that Microsoft are going to be making modifications to the 360 on an annual basis and updating the SKUs available, I believe it has also been suggested for Nintendo as well (DVD playback?), so I see no reason that Sony wouldn't do this as well.
Technology moves very quickly now, as does lifestyle, so while the PS3 may be used as the technology base for the 10 years, I would very much doubt that the PS3 will remain as it is today for the next 10 years.

That may be true, but I certaily will not be spending another $600+ each year just to keep up with consoles.
If the console industry is going to start moving around the same pace as the PC industry, I think I'll be dismissing a lot more games/systems than I used to.
I personally think 10 years is a bit too long for a console, because at a certain point, it will start showing its age. I don't expect any hardware revisions to the PS3 to change the power and capabilities as significantly as the iPod revisions, if anything they may make it smaller and cooler.
I can imagine them adding rumble in the near future.
I'm just hoping I'm not expected to be dishing out $600 every 24 or so months.
