The real reason are plastic shortages. No really, they gave that reason in their apologies to the Japanese DS-shortages. Do mind that they are producing 2.5 million DS's per month.

probably if we looked into the process of creating plastic though, we would find some reason to say that they should be able to produce enough of that too..
